It is with great sadness that we have to tell you of the very sudden and tragic death of Martyn Turner.  He leaves behind his wife Sarah and children Jack, Bryony and Luke.

He became an integral part of 1st Waltham Scout Group in the late 90’s, initially as a parent helper when his children joined the Group. Throughout the years he took on various roles becoming more involved, being our Executive Chairman for many years and eventually becoming our Group Scout Leader.  His dedication, commitment, enthusiasm and professionalism ensured that if, and when issues cropped up he was somehow able to sort or assist where necessary. For this reason and many others he was awarded the Medal of Merit.

He kept all the lightweight camping equipment, maintaining and repairing anything that needed it.  As a former member of Derbyshire Mountain Rescue Team his knowledge and expertise lead to good practices being put into place within the Group and Waltham Dollywaggon ESU. He was a great man to be on the hills with.

He organised the ‘January Walk’ every year which was attended by our Exec, Leaders and their families and Explorers. We always went to the hills and then finished the day at a pub for a good feed, a chat and a pint.

He was our link with Melton Mowbray District, going to all the meetings, representing our interests and feeding information back to us. He was also an active member of the Leicestershire Scouts Mountain Activity Team.

He gave much of his time to our District campsite at Holwell where he was a warden. He also provided and fitted a new kitchen in the main hut which was donated by the company he was a Director with.

His death has left a huge hole in our Group and our hearts as Martyn was the “glue” that kept Waltham Scout Group together. His warmth and enthusiasm was infectious and we shall miss him so much.
