Sale of County Centre – Update

Following a recent article in the Leicester Mercury,  which I am sure many of you  have read, I felt that as County Chairman, it was appropriate to update you on the progress of the sale of the County Centre.

The decision to sell the site has been properly documented and followed the appropriate procedures through the Scout Trust Corporation and complies with the legislation that affects us as a Charity.

This process has been going on for over three years where a number of committees have carried out various surveys of the centre and its use, or lack of use by Scouting.

Therefore, after very careful consideration,  the Executive Committee has responded to the assessments that stated the building was not fit for purpose for Leicestershire Scouting. The unanimous decision was to sell.

So where are we now in a short time an outline planning application will be submitted to the local council for approval. I must stress that this process may take up to two years.

We have a deal on the table, that our independent adviser, has said is the best deal currently for us.

We have a good scheme, a developer who is working with the local Scout Group to address their fears prior to submitting the planning application.

The Scout Association Trust, our parent in the Scout Association, has agreed with the sale.

It has not been an easy decision to come to or one we have taken lightly but one we feel can only benefit Leicestershire Scouting.

National St Georges Day Award

Roy Holloway (John’s Lee Wood Campside) was awarded The Silver Acorn by the Chief Scout in this year St George’s Day Awards unfortunately by the time the Award has come through Roy and his wife Gwen had moved away to Horsham

Below are a few words from Gwen.

”Yesterday we went to the Horsham St.Georges Parade, it was fine weather for a start then it poured! Anyway, we had the service and the DC presented several awards and I was feeling a bit sad as I had hoped they would present Roy with his silver acorn there after talking to a scouter at my church.

Anyway, we thought it had all finished and then the DC said “we have a new comer to Horsham who has also been awarded the silver acorn, Roy Holloway” so of course we were both dead chuff. Afterwards we went to have a cuppa and met scouters from my church and they are trying very hard ALREADY! to get us both involved.

Roy had a phone call at the w/e to ask if he would consider being the District Chairman – Roy said “no”. He’d rather be digging he! he!
