Stage 1: Getting started – Identify the need
What problems does litter cause our environment, who and what does it affect and how can we help? Get started on your project by finding out more!

- Enter the badge design competition! Design a square badge with a recycling or litter picking theme, and enter it on the Mucky March Facebook page by Friday 5th February. The winning design will be made and leaders will be able to buy them for all those who take part from the County Shop!
- Explore the local environment on your doorstep – on your daily exercise, or in your garden/outdoor area if you have one, see what nature you can find in your surroundings. https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/seek-out-nature/ Take pictures or make notes of the things you can find – think about what allows those creatures or plants to survive in your area. How does litter affect this wildlife and how may litter in other areas – such as the ocean, affect wildlife? Are there certain locations in your local area where litter is regularly left? What can we do about this?
- Do some research – find out all of the information you can about the issues litter creates, the problems with using single use plastics and how recycling materials can help. Find out what things can be recycled and how they are recycled in your local area. You could make a poster, a Powerpoint presentation, or a video to share with friends, family or the rest of your Section! Use some of the links below to help in your research and try out the activities – or look for information yourself.

As part of a Zoom meeting:
- Beavers/Cubs: Discuss habitats and learn about how they are being affected for some species by using this game. Talk about how litter can affect creature’s habitats – and how the overuse of resources can affect this. (E.g. using lots of paper leads to more need for deforestation, meaning more lost habitats – explain that recycling where we can reduces this problem. https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/habitat-hunt/ (It can be adapted for Zoom by asking each person to stand on a big piece of paper or a big mat in their own homes and getting them to fold it in half between each round – when they can’t fit onto the paper/mat they’re out! Siblings could also take part to show the effects of having too many creatures for a habitat area.)
- Talk about plastic pollution using some of the fact cards from this game. Discuss why we should avoid single use plastic where possible and why it is important that we dispose of waste properly rather than littering. https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/plastic-or-prey/ (You could also try and adapt the game to play over Zoom by secretly assigning the YP as ‘plankton’ or ‘plastic’ and asking one YP to act as the Sea Creature – picking which of their friends they would like to eat, but then discovering if they are safe food or dangerous plastic!)
- Scouts/Explorers: Talk about the things you’ve seen on your daily exercise in your local environment – where waste has been left, what the issues are and the main ways you can help. (You could even share photos or videos as part of the meeting). You could use Jamboard to make a note of some of the ideas, or get someone to take notes.
- Watch some of these videos and discuss what you learnt:
What are the main problems and what are the key messages we should be promoting? You could have a debate or work in small teams to agree your priorities.
Before you move to Stage 2 – make sure you have done all of the below:
- Learnt more about some of the key issues surrounding
- Identified some key issues in your local area which you will focus on (or which your whole Section will focus on).

Now you’re ready to plan your action!! Move onto Stage 2 to find out how – but first check out all the badge links!
Badge links: The activities in this stage contribute towards the following badges – check with your leader what else you would need to do to complete the full badge!
- For all Sections: Completing this Section finishes Part 1 of the Community Impact Staged badge. (The number of hours you complete in Stage 3 will dictate which stage you can earn ie. Stage 1,2,3 etc.) For Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, completing the full project will meet the community project / volunteering requirements towards the respective World Challenge Awards.
- Link these activities to the Global Issues badge when looking at the issues litter creates and how habitats are being lost. Stages 2 and 4 will have more links to this badge!
- The badge design could count towards your Creative badge.
- When going out on daily exercise and identifying the problems litter is created, why not work towards your Photographer badge? A walk in the countryside could count towards your Adventure Challenge and the Explore badge too! (As a bonus bit towards the Adventure Challenge, you could demonstrate to your leader that you know the Green Cross Code too!
- Your research on recycling and waste contributes towards the Environment Conservation badge – you will do more towards this badge in Stage 3.
- Monitoring the waste you and your family create at home would also work towards the Global Issues badge.
- Your walk in the Countryside works towards your Naturalist badge – you will do more of this in Stage 3. This also counts towards the Adventure Challenge and if you take photos, would work towards the Photographer badge.
- Completing many of these activities would count as the environmental activity towards your World Challenge.
- Your badge design could count towards the Artist badge
- Your research will work towards the Environmental Conservation badge. (You will complete this in Stages 3 and 4). You could also demonstrate the Internet Safety awareness needed for the Creative Challenge.
- Make a start on your Naturalist badge when you carry out your initial explorations in the Countryside – and continue this when you complete the later stages.
- Make a start on this environmental project and use it as one of your ICV list requirements for the Chief Scouts’ Platinum / Diamond Awards, or the Queen’s Scout Award. You’ll need to complete all 5 stages and agree your aims and activities with you leader – this could include working as a Young Leader to support a younger Section to complete the project, or be linked to a Young Leader Belt mission.
