John’s Lee wood Campsite is in 33 acres of over 500 year old ancient woodland.

It was designated as an area of importance  for nature conservation by a Charnwood Wildlife Survey in 2001.  We have wildlife and ground flora that only occurs in ancient woodland.  Woodland like ours is,  according to the survey,  irreplaceable and the conservation of our woodland is crucial to the future of our country’s wildlife.

Within the campsite are two large residential cabins and two smaller wooden cabins. There is a Shop that we call the Providore. There is a large toilet and shower block with male and female toilets and showers. There are 23 various sized camping areas some with concrete fire hearths and some that need altar fires.

There is an open all hours toilet for use on evening visits when we wardens are not on site.  We have an Activity Centre consisting of an Archery Range, Air Rifle shooting range and a climbing and abseiling tower complete with chimney.

Next to the activity centre we have the above ground caving experience which is run by group leaders after a short induction in to how to manage the caving system for safe use.  It comprises of a squeeze, a water feature, larger tunnels which connect to each other via block work chambers.  It is an ideal wet weather compromise if the climbing or any other activity is called off. As it is run by the visiting group leaders it can be run at any time of the day or night as long as no one else has it booked.

We have an assault course for the younger members and for those of us that are still big kids at heart. We are planning to enlarge the course and make even more entertaining in the near future.

We do have other free on site activities like the photo orienteering which can be obtained from the wardens cabin. There are several different sized pioneering poles for free use and ropes for bridges.  Lashing ropes have to be brought in by the groups though.

Generally the campsite is just a great place to camp at any time of the year.

Nearby attractions are:  Bradgate Deer Park; Beaumont Leys leisure centre; National Space Centre and Snibston Discovery Park. These are all within 20 – 30minutes of the campsite and wardens can help with directions.

There is a hospital within 30 minutes either in Leicester or Loughborough if any accidents occur.  Our wardens all have 1st response 1st aid knowledge and we have up to date first aid kits in the wardens’ cabin.
