First Response Training (Module 10)

Leaders, managers and supporters in Scouting must hold a current first aid qualification at the time of gaining their Wood Badge and then renew this at intervals of no more than every three years.

The minimum first aid required is First Response, but higher levels of qualification are needed if delivering first aid training or leading certain kinds of activities in remote environments.

Who needs first response?
  • All adults in scouting holding a Leader, Manager or Supporter appointment.
  • The First Response Certificate is designed specifically for adults in The Scouts and Girlguiding, based on the situations and issues that occur within those roles. It is not, therefore, externally recognised.
  • Certificate must be valid when Wood Badge is issued and then renew this at intervals of no more than every three years (see transition guidance in first aid updates).
  • All groups undertaking activities in remote environments (as defined in POR rule 9.7i) must have immediate access to someone holding a relevant and current Full First Aid Certificate.
How do I complete my training?

There are 4 possible methods to complete module 10:

  1. Blended learning
  2. Face to face first response training
  3. External qualifications or professional experience
  4. Professional qualifications
1. Blended Learning

The blended learning option is designed to give leaders a flexible option to completing module 10. To complete Module 10 via the blended learning route there are three steps to follow:

  1. First complete the eLearning course provided by Hampshire Scouts. This will take about 2.5 hours and can be undertaken in your own time; over separate sessions if you wish. The course is a combination of slides, videos and quizzes. On completion of the course, you will be directed to complete a form which will be sent to the County. (Ensure that you select Leicestershire Scouts) The eLearning can be found here
  1. Secondly attend a Zoom training/validation session, or, complete a Face to Face validation. These are interactive sessions where the topics you have learnt in the eLearning session will be discussed and validated as a group. You must complete the eLearning before attending this session. You can book yourself onto a Zoom session or the Face to Face Validation, via the County website here

Once you have successfully completed steps 1 and 2 above (the eLearning and Zoom session) you will have completed module 10A and your training records in Compass will be updated for you.

  1. Thirdly attend a face to face 1 hour practical session covering CPR and choking where you will demonstrate your CPR skills and knowledge after appropriate tuition. You can book yourself onto face to face session via the County website here.

Once you have completed step 3 (face to face CPR session) you will have completed Module 10B and your training records on Compass will be updated for you.

On completion of module 10A and 10B you have completed the First Response Module. The module has a 3 year expiry after which will have to be renewed.

On completion of Module 10A and 10B you have completed the first response module 10, which is valid for 3 years.

2. Face to Face Learning

Face to face training can be arranged for Districts subject to trainer availability. To arrange face to face training within a District LTMs should source  a suitable venue and then email firstresponse@leicestershirescouts.org.uk to book a trainer.

3. External Qualifications

Any course that is set by a reputable body and covers the same syllabus as the Scouts first response course and length requirements can be considered as a suitable alternative to a First Response Certificate. Examples of reputable bodies include: St John Ambulance, The British Red Cross, British Canoeing, Mountain Training, etc.

Where an external course does not cover an element of the Scout First response syllabus the member additional training will be required in order to cover them.

The most common external qualifications are listed below. You can top up these qualifications to meet the Scout First Response syllabus by clicking on, and undertaking these eLearning conversion courses:

First Response Conversion – 3 day First Aid Work

This First Aid module is designed to complete the additional topics required for the First Response, having completed the First Aid at Work (3 day) course.

First Response Conversion – 1 day Emergency First Aid Work

This First Aid module is designed to complete the additional topics required for the First Response, having completed the Emergency First Aid at Work (1 day) course.

First Response Conversion – Child First Aid course

This First Aid module is designed to complete the additional topics required for the First Response, having completed the 2-day Child First Aid course, St John School’s First Aid or similar.

On completion of the conversion course you will be emailed a confirmation certificate. Please send this certificate and a copy of your external qualification to your LTM or firstresponse@leicestershirescouts.org.uk and your training records on Compass will be updated.

4. My professional qualification means I have a First Aid qualification.

The Scouts recognises that some professions by the nature of the job will have a first aid element; for example, Nurses, Midwives, Police Officers, Medical Practitioners, Members of HM Armed Forces, Ambulance Care – Assistants/Paramedics/Technicians, etc. To exempt these professions from undergoing more first aid training, they are required to provide evidence of an up-to-date qualification which should meet the criteria of the Scouts First Response Syllabus. With regards to ‘evidence’, this can be a certificate or an official letter confirming the necessary areas have been met. Please email your evidence to firstresponse@leicestershirescouts.org.uk for validation.
