Water Activities


Leicestershire Scouts Sailing Team are able to offer Sailing sessions for Explorers, Scouts, Cubs, Guides and Brownies.

A typical session includes a safety briefing and a brief introduction into the controls of the boat. Then the group will go out in the boats to have fun and learn how to handle the boat.  Some may be taken out by one of our Scout qualified instructors. Group bookings are available on Saturday Mornings, 1000 – 1300, and Saturday afternoons 1400 – 1700, cost £10 per person with a non-refundable deposit of £50 and a minimum charge of £100 per session, min 10, max 24 people per session.  Sailing runs from March until the end of October

If smaller groups find it easier you can of course share a session with another section of your group, or another troop, Scouts and Cubs, or any mixture of your groups can be accommodated to make the numbers up to the maximum of 24.

We also run courses to enable you to achieve RYA qualifications and these can be used towards Chief Scout Awards and Duke of Edinburgh Award schemes. We also support County events such as Cub Camp, Splash Camp and Charnwood!

Bookings Now being taken for the RYA Level One course,  16th and 23rd March.

What your Scout will need?

You should come in your normal clothes (not jeans) and bring with you:

  • At least one, preferably two, complete changes of warm clothing, including underwear.
  • Waterproof coat and trousers.
  • An old pair of shoes (not wellies or walking boots) i.e. plimsolls or old trainers
  • A towel, preferably two.

A buoyancy aid and refreshments will be provided.

Open Sailing

Takes place on Saturday, beginning in June through to October. The morning session runs from 1000 till 1300 and the afternoon 1400 till 1700.  If you have an RYA Qualification, you can drop in for a morning or afternoon of Sailing without your Leaders, you just need your parent/guardian’s consent.  Please email the Sailing Team of your intention to attend, sailing@leicestershirescouts.org.uk.  All sessions cost £10 and will be led by a qualified Instructor.

The Sailing Team will have Blanket Badges for sale for the Cubs, Scouts and Explores for those that take part in the activity at a small extra cost. Please ask for further details.

Hotdoggers Kayak pool sessions at Cossington street pool on Tuesday nights starting in November.

Sessions will be ¾ hr pool time.

Finishing at 7:45pm arrive for 6:45 for pre session briefing.

Hot Doggers . . .

The water activity team are pleased to be able to offer fun sessions on the River Soar at the LOPC again this year.

Bookings for these sessions are now being taken for the 2016/17
Sessions are being offered in blocks of 5 so you can book for 5, 10, 15 or 20 on a session we believe this will suit most groups’ requirements but if you have a requirement not catered for please e-mail and ask – we can normally accommodate.


Each block of 5 will cost £25 and any agreed additions to this are charged @ £5 each.

You will then be e-mailed confirmation with an invoice for your session which we ask you pay before your session. This will save us sorting out payments on the night and enables us to get on with having fun on the water.

Following payment you will be sent a receipt.

If you have not been along before why not come and have a go. The team will ensure you have fun and want to come back.

We always love to see new groups come along and we have a boat to suit everyone.

Break Out Canoe Club . . .

runs various activities at Hinckley Water Activities Training Centre on Coventry Road, Hinckley. Many camps and day trips are run throughout the year and ‘Club Night’ runs every Monday night 6.00pm to 8.00pm from April to October

We currently still have vacancies for bookings from groups for weekends in the spring and autumn, and for groups or individuals for our adventurous summer voyages.

Did you know your group could enter The Tall Ships Race on one of our boats?

Would you like to take a group away on a sailing adventure? No previous sailing experience necessary! Have a holiday voyage to the Netherlands and return by ferry?

We meet or exceed all MCA standards. We can supply a full risk assessment, insurance details, and we are full members of ASTO and an RYA recognised training establishment.

Young people can work towards their RYA Start yachting and Competent Crew awards on our voyages, and longer voyages count for DofE Gold Residential.

Individuals can book onto summer holiday voyages!

11 berths on board for your group on a weekend voyage, and 9 on a summer voyage.

Minimum age is 10 years for weekend trips, 14 years for summer voyages, and 15 on Tall Ships Race voyages.

A voyage with us is not just about the sailing:

 Through physical activity and teamwork in an unfamiliar environment, we aim to develop communication skills, and build self-esteem and resilience.

7-20 July – Tall Ships Race voyage Ipswich – Sunderland – Esbjerg, and return by ferry/flight.

20 -28 July Tall Ships Cruise in Company – Esbjerg to Stavanger

28 July – 11 August – Tall Ships Race Esbjerg to Harlingen and then on to Ipswich.

19 – 28 July Ipswich via Frisian Islands and Netherlands to Amsterdam, and return by ferry/flight.

28 July – 4 August:  Amsterdam to London

4-11 August:  London to Ipswich

11-17 August: Ipswich to Ipswich – East Coast Explorer

17-24 August : ASTO Small Ships Race: Ipswich to Gosport.
